Symptoms:

  • Unable to clean shaft
  • Poor lube oil control
  • Recontamination of new parts

Cause:

Shaft oil galley is not properly cleaned unless plugs are removed. Plugs that are left out or replaced with larger orifices decrease critical lube to planetaries.

Correction:

This pilot has a reduced orifice for improved lube flow, and end plug allows the shaft galley to be cleaned and a replacement plug installed.

In vehicles with listed Chrysler units, it is common for the overdrive section to suffer from poor lube oil control, resulting in burnt planetaries and failed bushings. One area of weakness is the intermediate shaft. Shafts are often contaminated and cleaning is difficult as it leaves the shaft unrepairable. The OE plug was generally not removed because replacements were not available or were difficult to find. Sonnax offers an intermediate pilot and plug kit 22171-02K to allow the shaft to be cleaned, and equally important, improve lube control. Each kit will service five shafts.

  • The Sonnax pilot has a smaller orifice, resulting in more lube flow to the bushings and planetaries.
  • The use of the Sonnax pilot allows the salvage or conversion of early, small-diameter pilot A727 shafts to later, large-diameter applications.
