A third facility recently joined Sonnax headquarters and distribution centers in Bellows Falls, Vt. On July 7, the employee-owned company purchased a former manufacturing space located only a quarter mile from existing Sonnax sites to house the company’s research and development teams.
“I am very excited to have the room to expand”, said Sonnax Senior Vice President of Development Steve Jaussaud. “We continue to grow, and have been getting tight on space. This facility will help us establish a great R&D center suited to our diverse product lines. As an engineering-driven company, this will allow Sonnax to become even better at product development and meeting our customer’s needs.”
The newly acquired building at 10 Spencer Drive in Bellows Falls contains 26,000 sq. feet of open space that will become the new home of the Sonnax engineering, product line management and technical support teams. The site will be completely renovated in the coming months to accommodate dedicated shop, testing and quality control areas, plus office space for approximately 35 employees. Space currently used in other Sonnax buildings for these activities will be freed up to accommodate growth in other areas of the company.
The building was sold to Sonnax by Chroma Technology Corp., an employee-owned manufacturer of interference filters located near Sonnax headquarters. Prior to Chroma’s ownership, Woodlan Machine operated out of 10 Spencer Drive for nearly 30 years. The shop has long provided machining services to Sonnax, and continues to do so out of a smaller, nearby facility.

Automakers have agreed to adopt a new "Right to Repair" law (based on the law in Massachusetts) as a national standard.
This law will:
These new rules suggest that, by 2018, independent shops will have access to OE data without having to pay each auto manufacturer for a proprietary interface. Anyone with a standard internet connection can have access to the same data as a dealer for the same price as a dealer. The auto manufacturers agreed to this system rather than face a patchwork of up to 50 state-mandated solutions. This certainly appears to be good news for the independent aftermarket!
The Sonnax torque converter product selection has expanded to include two new friction rings for Hyundai/Kia A6F24, A6MF1, and A6MF2 units. These rings provide the thermal capacity of Kevlar® along with improved consistency and shudder resistance to take on today’s demanding applications.
Troublesome issues in Toyota/Lexus U660E, U660F and U760E transmissions may include burnt B2 clutches, delayed/slipping reverse or no reverse operation at all due to wear in the B2 apply control bore. Solve these issues by installing the new Sonnax oversized B2 apply control valve kit 47740-27K which will restore the necessary hydraulic clearances required for proper valve function.
In GM 6L45, 6L50, 6L80, 6L90 units, the rubber seals between the center support in the case and the machined surface of the valve body are prone to leakage over time. This can result in continuous line pressure and lube flow loss, as well as clutch apply leakage in Reverse, 2nd and 6th.

Using Sonnax friction plate FD-CP-15 instead of the early version friction plate is recommended because the early, six-leaf, spring-style plates are prone to failure.

The Sonnax TASC Force® met in June following the 2013 ReMaTec Exhibition in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, for a new round of discussion about the latest transmission units and worldwide industry developments.
The Sonnax Technical Automotive Specialties Committee (TASC) Force is an international group of expert transmission rebuilders and technicians. Working closely with Sonnax design engineers and technicians, TASC Force members contribute product ideas, test new products, troubleshoot results and get together regularly to listen, discuss and compare findings. Members play an invaluable role in identifying the root causes of transmission problems and supporting the development of cutting-edge Sonnax transmission products for the automotive aftermarket.
Sixteen members from 10 different countries attended the June TASC Force meeting, bringing to the table a great deal of excitement and ideas for new transmission solutions.
"It's always a pleasure getting together and reconnecting with the great group of people that make up the TASC Force,” stated Maura Stafford, Sonnax Transmission Specialties Product Line Manager. “Their enthusiasm for helping us develop fixes for problems, as well as their depth of knowledge, is truly inspiring.”

The automotive aftermarket has long been familiar with Torrington bearings. Although most people know that Torrington is a company that manufactures these bearings, the term “Torrington bearing” has become synonymous with needle roller thrust bearings. “Torrington bearing” has become a generic term describing a type of bearing as much as it indicates a manufacturer who produces those bearings.
The Torrington Company was established in 1898 in Torrington, Conn. It was an independent company until an acquisition by Ingersoll Rand Corp. in 1968. In 2003, Torrington Bearing was sold to the Timken Company, which produced Torrington brand bearings until 2009. In 2009, JTEKT Corporation of Japan acquired the Torrington bearing line – including the manufacturing plants and tech center along with 3,400 employees – from Timken. Torrington became part of the JTEKT’s Koyo Bearings.
Throughout these changes in ownership, the Torrington brand remained the unquestioned leader in needle roller bearings to the automotive and industrial markets, and Sonnax has proudly supplied Torrington bearings to our customers for many years.
As part of the Torrington sale by Timken to JTEKT, Koyo was permitted to use the Torrington brand name for three years. At the end of 2012, that three-year agreement expires and these products formerly known as Torrington bearings will be marketed solely under the Koyo brand name. Despite the Torrington brand name reverting to Timken, these Koyo bearings are the same OE Torrington products, produced by the same people, using the same processes, in the same U.S. factories.

Forty-seven members of the Sonnax TASC Force® gathered May 7 and 8 in Vermont to discuss current and future challenges facing the aftermarket transmission industry. Sonnax was pleased to host the meeting for the first time in many years at its company headquarters in Bellows Falls.
"This year's TASC meeting was very exciting for all of us here at Sonnax," said Mark Kaplan, Sonnax Transmission Specialties Product Line Manager. "It gave us the opportunity to showcase all of the improvements that we have made at our facilities in Vermont."

The two-day meeting started with tours of the Sonnax Distribution and Technical Center and nearby corporate headquarters, which includes office, manufacturing and quality control facilities. Technical roundtable discussions followed, during which TASC members from 18 shops shared feedback from the field.
"We continue to get new product ideas from the group which includes the need for electronics and solutions for late-model transmissions as well as a host of converter items," said Kaplan.
The Sonnax TASC Force® met in Glasgow, Scotland, Oct. 9-11, 2011. Sixteen TASC members from the U.S. and eight European countries met with Sonnax personnel to discuss the state of the global transmission industry. TASC member John Mackie and his wife Dawn, of Mackie Transmissions in Glasgow, were hosts for the event. Festivities opened with a bus tour of the Scottish countryside on Sunday, Oct. 9. Highlights of the tour included Stirling Castle, the Trossachs regions of the Scottish Highlands, Lock Lomond and a tour of the Glengoyne Distillery.
The meetings began in earnest on Monday morning with updates on the progress of projects resulting from previous TASC Force meetings. A number of products originally suggested by the TASC Force are in varying stages of development by Sonnax. The meeting continued with the popular "round table" discussion where each TASC member presents a summary of issues they face, the solutions which are working for them and potential product suggestions which can help our entire industry deal with those issues.
The meeting also included in-depth discussions of vehicle electronics and the challenges those products present to the transmission industry. The Sonnax TASC Force® held its first meeting of the year April 29-30, 2011, at Jasper Engines & Transmissions in Jasper, Ind. The semi-annual gathering is an opportunity for aftermarket automatic transmission experts from around the world to examine problems facing the entire industry and discuss solutions.
The Sonnax Technical Automotive Specialties Committee (TASC) Force is composed of experienced transmission rebuilders and technicians who value technical innovations and have hands-on understanding of the latest units and industry developments. These professionals meet regularly to share their know-how, contribute product ideas, test new products and troubleshoot results with the understanding that everyone benefits when good ideas and products emerge from centuries of combined transmission wisdom.
Sixty participants from seven different countries attended the recent TASC Force meeting. Altogether, more than 22 companies specializing in transmission and torque converter rebuilding were represented. The presence of many torque converter technicians and specialists prompted a new level of discussion about problems and repairs outside of the transmission, such as transfer cases, torque converters and driveshaft slip yokes. TASC members also focused closely on strategies for improving the quality of component testing and CAN (Control Area Network) communication.
TASC meetings are held twice per year, typically with the spring meeting in the United States and a fall meeting held abroad. The next 2011 gathering is planned for October at Mackie Automatic Transmissions in Glasgow, Scotland.
The Sonnax TASC Force® held a semi-annual meeting Oct. 15-16, 2010, in Lucerne, Switzerland, bringing together an international group of transmission experts for two days of technical talks hosted by TASC member Adrian Marty of Automaten-Meyer AG.
Expert transmission rebuilders and technicians from around the world make up the Sonnax TASC Force (Technical Automotive Specialties Committee). Working alongside Sonnax engineers and technicians, they willingly share their hands-on knowledge of the latest units and industry developments to generate product ideas, test new parts, troubleshoot results and discuss and compare findings. Their efforts help provide answers and repairs for the entire transmission industry.
The TASC meeting began with a full day of discussion focused on new Sonnax projects, current transmission challenges and product proposals. Sonnax Product Line Manager Mark Kaplan noted that many of the new parts released in 2010 were a direct result of the group's European meeting the fall before. TASC members at that time had expressed a clear need for TR60-SN, ZF6HP26 and 5R55N valve body components, and the Sonnax team responded with the timely release of new repairs.
"We've been getting lots of great new project ideas from the European members of TASC Force," said Kaplan. "They have many opportunities to see newer units in their shops long before we see them here in the States."
The TASC meeting continued the second day on the floor of the Automaten-Meyer AG remanufacturing facility with hands-on demonstrations of new products and previews of those in progress. Bob Warnke, Sonnax V.P. of Technical Development, demonstrated rebuilding techniques for the new Aisin AW five- and six-speed valve bodies which incorporate linear solenoids for critical clutch-to-clutch shift timing.

Fifty members of the Sonnax TASC Force gathered in Philadelphia April 23-24, 2010, for roundtable discussion and technical sessions designed to facilitate the development of cutting-edge transmission solutions.
The Sonnax TASC Force® (Technical Automotive Specialties Committee) is composed of expert transmission rebuilders and technicians with a hands-on understanding of the latest units and industry developments. Working closely with Sonnax design engineers and technicians, TASC Force members contribute product ideas, test new fixes and troubleshoot results, then meet on a regular basis to compare findings. Members play an invaluable role in identifying the root causes of transmission problems and supporting the development of Sonnax transmission products for the automotive aftermarket.
The April TASC Force meeting was attended by Sonnax representatives as well as transmission specialists from the U.S. and abroad. Hosted by ValveBody Xpress, the event kicked off April 23 with a full day of talks and presentations on current and future rebuilding challenges. Steve Jaussaud, Sonnax V.P. of Sales, updated the group on a number of projects in development, many of which trace their origins to previous TASC Force discussions. Attendees spent the second day at the brand new, 31,000+ square foot VBX facility getting hands-on with Sonnax prototypes and newly released products. VBX specialists also introduced the group to specialized equipment and testing procedures used to ensure quality remanufactured valve bodies.
"This was one of our best meetings yet, with strong attendance from both our U.S. and European TASC Force members," said Mark Kaplan, Sonnax Transmission Specialties Product Line Manager. "Thanks to them, Sonnax is getting earlier information on the newest units hitting the industry, allowing us to stay ahead of the development curve."

Ganzeboom Transmissies in Almelo, Netherlands, hosted the Jan. 22-23 TASC Force meeting. For the first time, traditional participants from the U.S. and Western Europe sat side by side with their counterparts from Eastern Europe and the Middle East, a reflection of the automotive industry's increasingly global nature. Attendees included Sonnax representatives as well as individuals from Belgium, Germany, Latvia, Sweden, the Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Switzerland, the U.K. and the U.S.
The two-day event focused on roundtable discussion as well as hands-on workshops in the Ganzeboom facility. Bob Warnke, Sonnax V.P. of Technical Development, presented and moderated the group's technical exchanges and discussions on market trends, product feedback and new product idea development. Sonnax also introduced to the group its first on-site European representative, Nelson Harmon, who is stationed in Amsterdam.
