Clearing & Relearning Hyundai Shift Adapts

Valve Body Xpress

Clearing Shift Adapts

Most Hyundai vehicles produced since 1996 require transmission adaptive shift values be cleared and relearned any time the transaxle, valve body or PCM/TCM are replaced or reprogrammed.

Some vehicles require the Hyundai HI-SCAN or GDS or equivalent to clear the adaptive shift values but many can be cleared by simply removing the negative battery cable for 10 seconds. Please refer to the chart below to determine the correct procedure for your vehicle application.

  • Method 1: Disconnect negative battery cable for 10 seconds
  • Method 2: Use HI-Scan, GDS or equivalent scan tool.

Adaptive Learn Procedure

After the adaptive shift values have been cleared complete the following procedure:

  • Attach a scan tool to the vehicle.
  • Have an assistant monitor the TPS percentage and transmission fluid temperature to ensure conditions for relearning are met.
  • Accelerate from a stop at specified TPS percentage and transmission fluid temperature while the trans shifts through 1-2-3-4-5 and decelerate slowly to a stop. Stop for 5 seconds. Repeat procedure 5 times. NOTE: Hold accelerator pedal steady during up shifts.

If additional adaptation is needed:

  • Perform sequential downshifts (5-4, 4-3, 3-2 and 2-1) at small to moderate throttle openings.
  • Perform several forced downshifts (5-3, 5-2 and 3-1) at moderate to large throttle openings.
  • With vehicle stopped, move shift lever from P-N-D and back, stopping 3-5 seconds each gear. Repeat 5 times.
  • With vehicle stopped, move shift lever from P-N-R and back, stopping 3-5 seconds each gear. Repeat 5 times.
